Obama not going to represent the US is a travesty, and speaks very very poorly of him. Can you imagine O standing in the shadow of that wall and ordering the Russians to tear it down? Reagan did just that. 27 miles of Berlin wall went through the heart of the city. That was the first section built and is what you see on TV. The finished wall was 96 miles long and completely encircled West Berlin, leaving it an enclave of freedom located 110 miles behind the iron curtain. Much of the outer ring, as we called it, was not brick and mortar. It was constructed of multiple obstacles including barbed wire, concertina wire, ditches, dog runs, mine fields, machine gun towers with over-lapping fields of fire, and walking and motorized armed patrols. I arrived in Berlin the first time in Nov 63. Two weeks before JFK was murdered and at a time when the wall was still being built and "improved". My assignment was initially as the junior (later as the senior) demolition and explosives expert on a Berlin based A Team for the next three years. Some years later as a captain I had the honor and privilege of commanding one of those 6 Berlin teams. uw
