If one lives in a gateway city, what do you think of taking a portion of one's cash and getting a ~5% mortgage and buying a property to rent out? Seems like taking on some cheap debt, albeit in the face of declining real estate values, might not be a bad alternative hedge.

Of course, that's just one more anchor here in the US. If things get super-bad, I may want to head back to the tropics or somewhere lesser-developed and live a simpler life.
