Being a slave to a narrow element of your base is bad, but that's not the issue here as much as the Dems might want to portray it as such.

Abandoning your base is also bad, if they have no particular reason to vote for your party than your party will be unlikely to win elections.

Beyond that I think principles matter more than party. How does it help me if the Republicans win with the policies of the Democrats? If at a particular time conservative and libertarian* ideas don't have enough support to win, than the point is to push the ideas and try to hope to change the balance, not to give up and support the opponents ideas, at least that's the point if you aren't just a blind partisan with little care for principle.

* moderately libertarian, I have little hope for seriously libertarian ideas gaining traction
