Back in the early 90's, DEC had the bulk of the market on its own VMS OS. In those days, there was probably more rDB sold on DEC that Informix and Sybase combined in all their markets, but because it was a captive market, most people do not think about it. After all, how much do people think about DB/2 on MVS or OS/400. Yet, these are very significant markets, and IBM sells significantly more than either Informix and Sybase. Really, when dealing with such captive markets, the price of the software and the price of the hardware are sometimes adjustable, so it is harder to get a real feel for the size of the market. My statements are based on what I believe are realistic values set on the software sold on those machines. In particular, the AS/400 line is a very large line in terms of sales.
