Very fascinating about your ancestor and the Old Alexandria City Cemetery

Have you researched the location in Alexandria City? There is a site that specializes in cemeteries.

I am trying to picture where the cemetery is------believe there is an historical one at the George Washington Masonic temple near to the train station. (and likely many more)

My surmise on his joining in the Civil War at age 59 is he did so because it was precisely what most men did----fight if you were able. They had no choice.

If they refused to join they often suffered consequences as did my Great Grandmother's 1st husband in Virginia.

They didn't own slaves and he declared this isn't our battle.
To keep from going to war------he hid in the mountains. His wife carried food to him from the house into the mountains. She was followed one evening and he was shot by a confederate soldier because he refused to sign up.

Several years later being a young widow with 2 children, she married a man whose wife died in childbirth----------he had already fathered 12 children by his first wife.

He then fathered 12 children by her, fathering a total of 24 children. My Grandmother on my father's side is a child of that second marriage.
