One problem with the predictive ability of the Imperial Overstretch idea is that the idea is well know in policy circles - and there is the possibility that policies could change, and the US systematically reduce overseas commitments.

There has been some re-arrangement of bases in Japan and Okinawa.

The US may decide it does not need bases to protect the UK from Germany and Italy from eastern Europe, that South Korea can do more for their own defense, that Columbia is more stable, etc.

So Imperial Overstretch could become a self - negating prophecy, a warning that gets heeded.
