Rather than the monarchy surviving, except perhaps as it does in England and Spain... his son might be a unifying figure, and someone who could rein in Karzai on behalf of the population.

There is absolutely nothing I've read to suggest his son will be a unifying factor. In fact, this is the first I've heard of him. I wonder if the Afghans even know who he is. Speaking of which, has anyone asked the Afghans what they want?
