It's hard to argue with post WWII decisions that turned an implacable enemy into a peaceful friend but, I still wonder if we shouldn't have shot Hirohito in the middle of Tokyo

I've actually read the US State Department archives preserving the discussions in the US occupation command and the State Department regarding this. MacArthur, Truman, the Joint Chiefs, the whole lot, were adamant that the Emperor had to preserved. We tend to think that the war ended, we occupied Japan, and they were our close and steady pals ever since. The reality is that it was a close-run game that almost saw Japan go Red. MacArthur and everyone else at the time was convinced that if we did away with the Emperor, the one conservative uniting force in Japanese society, we would lose Japan to the Communists.
