Fructose is fructose, whether it's in cherries, apples, or high-fructose corn syrup in spaghetti sauce. Of course, cherries and applies have other factors, such as flavonoids, that are healthy.

The data seem to point to 50 grams per day as a threshold over which adverse effects really start to develop. 50 grams is an awful lot and I think that far less is preferable. From a practical standpoint, you can avoid overdoing fructose simply by minimizing exposure to high-fructose containing foods, honey, sucrose, maple syrup (whether or not it's real maple syrup), dried fruit, and not overconsuming fruit.

Remember also that modern fruit is often very different from wild fruit that humans consumed as hunter-gatherers. Most modern fruit is very sugary.
