John.. I agree with you that the split by itself was not responsible for the fall in price.. There was however an additional million shares added after the split.

I calculated some data relationships this afternoon and came up with some interesting results.

1. Comparing EPS to Revenue (the proportions are quite different.)
1st 98 .13 on 5,013mil sales
4th 97 .33 on 6,054mil
3rd 97 .40 on 5,103mil

2. Comparing Net Income/Revenue
1st 98 = 18% (908/5013)
1st 97 = 15% (425/2790)

3. Comparing % increases 1997-1996
Share increase 53%
Revenue increase 79%
EPS increase 30%

4. Quarterly Revenue share of annual average last 4 years
Q1 - 20.4%
Q2 - 22.3%
Q3 - 27.6%
Q4 - 29.6%

Current P/E is 8.7...one would think that the issue should go for more than this. But with EPS bouncing around, P/E may not be as meaningful as some other method of evaluating. It looks like the share increase has had an effect on EPS.

I listened to the conference call replay, and when the discussion came to 'backlog' the tape was blanked.. Does anybody have any ideas.
