not exactly related to your post...but this is a true story and happened last week in my 10 year old son's 5th grade class. We live in a very liberal area in the san fernando valley (CA) that is populated by many movie industry types. There is one kid in my son's class that is particularly obnoxious in his precociousness. The kid grandstands and tells jokes in a way that says "pay attention to me, pay attention to me". And until last week I pretty much disliked him immensely. Their social studies class is studying immigrants right now. The teacher asked the class "who can tell me something about immigrants?".....Zach, the kid in question, responds "I can tell you one thing, they shouldn't be here". The teacher was appalled and responded with "you know zach, you always have to make a joke of everything, I can't deal with you right now, go to the office". Zach left the room to go to the office...crying from the rebuke. He was fortunate that he ran into one of the two or three conservative moms in the school who actually was sympathetic to his view and consoled him. Though I thought his response was somewhat humorous, I didn't think it was absolutely a joke. But more importantly, score one for stiffling free expression and not taking advantage of a "learning opportunity". Instead of discussing the melting pot nature of the USA that has embraced immigration she simply shut the kid up. I do have to say, though the teacher's at my son's school are obviously quite liberal, in general they are very good...as is this teacher specifically. And I suppose there is the side benefit that I don't have to listen to this kid's annoying angling for attention when I am helping out in the classroom. Zach has pretty much stopped raising his hand.
