the school system comes apart in "middle school." The kids hit puberty and the school system starts giving a lot of freedom they never had in grade school.

I went to a 1-8 grade school and a 9-12 high school.

My kids went to 1-5 grade school, 6-8 middle school, and a 9-12 high school. At the middle school they were isolated from teenagers but walked from class to class taught by different teachers instead of staying in the same room all day as I did.

Based on that experience, I think middle school is wrong-headed and leads kids astray with too much freedom before they are ready for it. There are a few advantages, especially if the school happens to have an outstanding teacher skilled in an outside discipline such as the geologist who taught my son and sponsored a week long geology/history field trip that I attended.

My daughter never completed high school, because she was forced to take prerequisites that she did not need and which bored her. And she was bared from taking upper level classes that would have interested her. She dropped out before completing grade 10.

But not before we petitioned the state superintendent of education to let her take the GED exam before she reached the minimum age requirement.

She got an associate degree in interior design before she was 18 and before she was 21 she got a Bachelor's in Education. Now she refuses to teach because the public school system is so consumed by liberalism. She got excellent results in a charter school teaching Russian immigrant kids, but all that is behind her now.
