"Invention is a wonderful and useful process. But the practice of invention has been frustrated by corporate predation on the rewards."

Yes, I agree. I feel, nonetheless, that innovation will never be stifled unless we end up with a dystopian society which I feel is highly unlikely, given the momentum with which technology is moving forward in terms of price/performance, which is the basis of our economy and the viability of any business enterprises. Examples can be given on how a particular innovations may be stifled, but that will not reverse a trend that is inexorably moving us ahead. Those enterprises (oligopolies) that are holding on to dear life will die away no matter what they do, IMO.

Given that assigning any probability on predicting the future is impossible, I will take the optimistic path that we will weather the imbalance we are seeing in our political/economic sphere, today, and come out of this with minimum pain and be much better off.
