Then you should be truly ecstatic when it goes up to 30% as projected (assuming we take no corrective action). Right now it's sucking up our productive capital at double the rate of the Euro's.

Think of it this way... that's 8% of GDP that could be going to education or infrastructure or paying down the debt or iPods and big screen TVs for everyone or any of 100's of other priorities.

In the IT business there has for years been a term -- "the bleeding edge" -- that refers to cost of always pushing the limits of technology. It is a very real cost.

They don't use that term in the medical business for obvious reasons, I suppose -- but US health care is on the bleeding edge. It costs more, but it is what causes technological development to occur. Without it, technology will stagnate. Today, it is said the body of medical knowledge doubles every five years or so (I have no idea how anyone knows that). If you cut the US expenditures in half, this rate of increase in medical knowledge, whatever that rate truly is, will be substantially reduced. I don't believe that is a good thing.

I'd much prefer to have excellent health care than a new big TV. I think most Americans would feel the same way if the discussion were put to them rationally.

Besides, as Tim said, there is no legislation under consideration that would reduce that figure (all the existing legislation will, of course INCREASE it).
