"Mother and fetus are one being, mother and fetus are separate beings."

"We see that the mother's being by nature is responsible for the condition of the fetus. I've never been able to grasp the concept that they have conflicting purposes or rights, or that one has rights and the other does not."

When two distinct Human beings exist in a close relationship there is always some degree of conflicting interests and rights. Lets say you have a set of co joined twins one wants to get married to a man and move to Argentina the other wants to stay single and become a doctor in the States. There is a clear case of conflicting interests and rights. Does the first have the right to get married and move to Argentina? Sure! Does she have the right to do that to the detriment and against the wishes of her sister? I would say not.

In the case of an abortion the mother has a moral and natural obligation to nurture and protect the life and health of her unborn child in all but exceptional circumstances. Does she have the right to drink her face off? Sure? Is it ethical for her to do that in light of the negative impact that will have on the child developing in her womb? I don't think so. Whether that's legal or enforceable is a separate question altogether.

OTOH: If the fetus is lodged in the mothers Fallopian tube then there is a a strong case for ending the life of the fetus because to do nothing would result in the loss of life for both the mother and the child. I am not against abortion for that sort of reason; what I do find morally reprehensible is abortion for the sake of convenience which constitutes the vast majority of the abortions that are done today.
