Breast Cancer Treatment Leaves Patients With Chronic Pain
Baltimore Sun. 2009 Nov 11

oncologystat.com

Long after patients complete their treatments for breast cancer, many still experience lingering pain and discomfort. Danish researchers found that nearly half of the breast cancer survivors they surveyed reported these problems for 2 or 3 years after treatment. A high percentage (77%) said they experienced pain every day, and in 13% the pain was severe. Surgery and nerve damage accounted for some of the pain, but radiation and chemotherapy also were contributing factors. Younger women under age 40 were most likely to have chronic pain related to breast cancer treatment. The pain affected not only the breast area but also the sides of the body and the underarm area. Younger women who had breast-conserving surgery were much more likely than women in their 60s to have residual pain. The results of this study, which were published in the November 11 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, has raised awareness of the issue of continued pain in breast cancer survivors.
