I dislike the GS-FED-Treasury links myself. But if GS were the only game in town it would be even worse. My point was not to defend GS.

If you look at almost any large American corporation, they all mess in politics. From campaign donations, legislative lobbyists, to the fake research rolling out of their Think Tanks, its all a problem. But the problem is worse if you have clearly dominant players, unless those players happen to be run by CEO's who for some reason have adopted good civic behavior. Most of them have not it would appear. I'm sure there are examples of some very good ones.

AFAIK, what GS did was perfectly legal. Shoveling shit out the door to dupes, and betting against it was allowed in our free market system. If you don't make something illegal or regulate it, people will figure out how to profit from it. No surprise. What I do find surprising is how many people can't figure that out.
