It was not an article I read, it was book written by the lone survivor of a Spec Ops team in the Afghan mountains. Half the book is devoted to the training they receive and he often made reference to E. Texas. I gathered a lot of Spec Ops guys including the authors brother come from there. He was not a big city boy...

That was Marcus Luttrell ("Lone Survivor") -- a great book BTW.

He was from Huntsville, which is an 90 minutes or so Northwest of Houston, just off I-45.
