The house mouse, Mus musculus, is the lowest form of life on Earth. Right behind roaches.
(Explanatory note.... I have been bitten by mice about two and a half zillion times, and am violently allergic to the suckers...... while I love animals almost in general, there is, IMO, no mouse better than a dead mouse.)
Rats, OTOH, can be like pocket dogs if you get the correct genetics.... smart, friendly, playful..... genuinely wonderful creatures.
