Your math is in fact nonsensical.

It is not my math. It is from an article that examined a hypothetical family of 3 in Virginia:



At what looks like ~15,000 of income, this family apparently recieves ~25,000 in various benifits, grants and subsidies totaling ~40,000. As the income of this family goes up, this family looses these benefits one after another. So each $1 earned loses $1 of lost benefits and increased taxes. Implicit marginal tax rate of this additional dollar is 100%.
