When they were first taken captive, my reaction was WTF were they doing sailing in the area they were in? Did they think the pirates would not bother with them because they were on a 38' sloop? In some respects they're lucky to have been taken by pirates off Somalia. They're interested in ransom. Some pirates in the Straits of Malacca would just slit their throats and toss them overboard and steal the boat and everything on it.
