I had lunch yesterday with someone who shared your "understanding." She was just so incensed at the "no" crap and the "death panel" crap that she couldn't see that, obnoxious and intellectually dishonest and tacky as that is, they really didn't have any other play. She wanted an honest debate. I share that view. I wanted it desperately.

But I am realistic and recognize that the response of the rational, intellectual segment on the right was realistic. There was nothing they could do so they relinquished the field to the hacks and the nutters who at least had a chance of defeating the monstrosity. Quality, sustainable reform would have been great but, given that that wasn't remotely possible, it is not unreasonable to defer to the goons.

At least if you look just at tactics for this issue. The R's might have lost something long term because the whole party ends up looking as stupid and classless as the base.
