We should be very suspicious of a politician who didn't support science. My question would be, "Okay, what DO you use to establish the validity of your viewpoints?" With GWB, he freely admitted "prayer" was a common recourse and that he consulted a "higher father" (than his dad). The problem for me is that there is no independent assessment by ANYONE, conservative, liberal or middle of the road when someone uses their personal prayerful meditation sessions to determine the true course WE ALL should follow.

I had a dream last night that I ran a grocery store in rural California. At issue in the dream was whether we should carry a house branded dog food. I don't expect anyone to take this perceptually convincing internal dialog as gospel for running a grocery in rural California or a definitive thought process about whether a small grocery should carry house branded dog food. I don't think having a dream like this, even if realistic and convincing, makes me a grocer. My reasonable concern is that people who have relied upon prayerful meditation, religious insight and other internal metaphysical experiences about what should be done with people, cultures, science and scientists has been historically very messed up. If I were religious, I could easily mistake my dream imagery as "being from God telling me to do <such and such>." I don't want my politicians falling into that trap.
