Jim, Zenith will be the exclusive LGE distributor for all HDTV and SDTV sets sold in the US. By April 1998, Zenith will be the first CE manufacturer to deliver HDTVs (64" wide, projection models) and SDTVs (32"wide, direct view models including some, at a later date, with Divx units and NC capability as options).
LGE, however, will sell their chips to any other CE and computer manufacturer. They've invested hundreds of millions to develop this state-of-the-art chip set and need to sell many millions to recoup their investment.
The bottom line for Zenith is that they will be the first to get the chip set giving the company a great jump on the competition. Next we need a DBS company to deliver HDTV and a company like HBO to provide HDTV content. Dale Cripps, of the HDTV Newsletter believes that there is a need for a new DBS to start delivering HDTV content. web-star.com
With recent advances in digital compression and multiplexing, present DSB systems and cable sysytems easily could transmit HDTV content, on a selected basis, provided they upgrade their systems. Dale, do you agree? |
