From the outset all I wanted was an honest debate. The Ds are, IMO, responsible for that not happening.

A pox on both, IMO.

The point was not whether one side or the other or both engaged in non-constructive behavior but whether individuals attached to either side could recognize why the other side took that tack that it did. I was arguing to Don and to my friend that I could see why the Republicans took that tack that they did even as I was disappointed by it. You also clearly understand why they did why the Republicans did what they did. They're your boyz, after all. But can you understand why the left took the tack they did? I can, even as I was just as disappointed by it.

I try for honest understanding and I differentiate between understanding and agreement or support. My understanding does not imply support. It takes effort, both in intellect and objectivity, to understand what one doesn't support. It also takes effort to differentiate and to not apply the halo or devil effect based on one's political preferences. I find that effort both worthwhile and telling, which is why I was arguing it.
