There was an excellent segment on 60 Minutes this Sunday, about how expensive death is in this country. 18-20% of the dying end up in the Intensive Care Unit, where the average charges run $10,000/day.

Some stay there for just a few days, some stay there for months. Medicare is REQUIRED to pay for ANY "necessary" treatment while they are there. This results in wastes such as a person dying of cancer receiving a quadruple bypass.

A LOT of medical expense could be saved by rationalizing this horrible system, that really serves no one. Desperate families will agree to ANYTHING to keep their dying loved ones around, even as tube-fed vegetables.

When it's grannie's time, we really DO need to pull the plug on grannie!
