There is too much political favoritism between Pakistan and Taliban...

Pakistan is a country with an extremely complex balance of power between the Military, Intelligence (ISI), and civilian government, in its government structure. The relationship with the Taliban that you speak of is primarily with the the ISI.

Thus, this really is about Pakistan, as country, coming to it's senses, or splitting up. Taliban are primarily Pashtun, and Pashtuns make up the largest ethnicity in Pakistan AND Afghanistan. Consequently, Pashtuns make up a prominent majority of both the Military and Intelligence services. And Pashtuns are divided into tribes who are often at conflict with one another.

This makes for some interesting politics.

As for paying them off, you should be the first person to know that paying "protection" money will only make the price go up later. Look at the those Somali Pirates who are primarily muslim and now consider taking hostages to be a primary source of income.

I prefer to give them a choice.. Take the carrot and be good, or a thump up aside the head with my big stick..
