Hey Tim,

I think it was Gates that gave us a rule of thumb for costing out any war effort. He said that it costs about $1M per year per soldier. That's a fully loaded figure that includes, salary, benefits, insurance, equipment, food, etc.

So right now we have 68K troops in Afghanistan. If we add another 32K troops, that's 100K troops. So total cost would be $1M X 100K = $100B per year. They've been estimating that it would require a 10 year commitment to succeed. So $100B X 10 years = $1 trillion.

Just a good rule of thumb to use when you start hearing troop numbers being discussed.
