This was not New Agers and hippies being irresponsible, it was real estate tycoons (with the help of Howard Jarvis and Paul Gann) who, with the complicity of reactionary old people, many of whom are dead now, voted themselves a permanent tax break. Two types of people benefit - people who don't move and people who own commercial real estate for many years. I'm an exception in that I haven't moved for 20 years. But I also didn't rack up debt and have always been a big saver. I run a balanced budget in my home.
