Youngest voters spurn Obamacare By: Barbara Hollingsworth Examiner Columnist 11/24/09 4:45 PM EST Former Clinton advisor Dick Morris says that under-30 voters, once the most enthusiastic supporters of President Barack Obama’s far-reaching health care reform, are now its strongest opponents.
National polling done by John Zogby for the League of American Voters following a TV and Internet ad campaign in Arkansas, North Dakota and Maine found that 65 percent of the youngest voters are opposed to Obama’s healthcare initiative, compared to 55 percent opposition among senior citizens.
This is a sea change, as 58 percent of under-30 voters initially supported the program.
Here are the poll results:
Age Support/Oppose Obama Plan Under 30 25-65
30-49 28-60
50-64 41-50
Over 65 32-55
"These results among 18- to 29-year-olds are striking. It puts in jeopardy the whole theory of the new Democratic majority, because young people are essential to that base," pollster Zogby said.
Morris, who says he is “blown away by these results,” says there are plans to run similar ads in the swing states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Maine, Indiana, Virginia, and Connecticut before the Senate vote. |
