I think the correct analagy is junk mail...do you read your junk mail? Neither do I. But it keeps on coming, and often from the same people. So I figure someone must be reading it. Actually, I think the "direct marketers" consider 3% to be a good response rate. Since Yahoo! is able to better direct advertising (brokerage house to someone who asks for stock quotes, etc), although the direct marketers are improving their targeted advertising as well. It's not a question of whether banner ads work or not (I'm sure they do), but a question of valuation. Do you think it reasonable to value a direct marketing firm at greater than 1 times revenues? I don't, although I guess I could go to 1.5 if the firm had great growth prospects. By the way, I'm short Yahoo! (at 42 3/4 this time), and would never trade it from the long side at these valuations.
