< there would be a "fanatical" parallel to Iran>

There is, IMO, a parallel but it is very different, and I'd prefer the Israelis because there are so many fewer of them and they aren't expansionist to the degree that many other countries have been and are. Russia and China have had imperialist agendas in the past. Iran, some minor expansion. The "religions" in these countries varies so widely as to evade comparison, but both the U.S. and Iran and to a lesser degree, China have religions/philosophies that are or have been evangelical and expansionist. There is a barrier between the U.S. evangelical(s) and national policy. Some people would consider communism something akin to a religion, which is why I'd put China and Iran closer together on that spectrum than Russia.

Unfortunately, the Religious Right in this country periodically can amalgamate into a voting block and national policy can start to look imperialistic. We need only look to GWB who used terminology that was either grossly ignorant or pandering to Christian expansionism, depending upon how one interprets it. I for one am not going to characterize our conflicts as being us against Islamic Imperialism. Islam has been at war with itself for a thousand years. There is a potential for Imperialist Islam, but for now I see it happening as expansionism at a regional scale.
