<<Let's hope the SparQ cartridges are compatible with Syjet. >>
You can pretty much rule out compatibility with SyJet.
For starters, look at the name. If it was compatible, it would be SyJet 1GB.
Secondly, the only way they can possibly achieve the price of $200 per drive, and $33 per cartridge is by going to a single platter design. There is no way that a drive with a single set of heads (2, one for each side of a platter) is going to be able to read and/or write cartridges with 2 platters (which require 4 heads).
By the same token, the SyJet 1.5 GB which has capacities of 750MB per platter times 2 platters, will not be able to read and/or write a single platter 1GB cartridge. The head that was designed for 750MB would not be able to read and/or write a 1GB platter (otherwise, SyQuest would have shipped a 2GB drive to begin with.) Also, the whole dynamics of a 2 platter cartridge versus a 1 platter cartridge would make for a difficult engineering problem in a single drive.
So, don't count on any form of compatibility... |
