Point being that any small winery who sells most of their production to a mailing list and/or out of the winery has no reason to advertise in WS. They couldn't handle any additional demand if they wanted to. And yet, these wineries produce some, if not most, of the highest rated wines.

I hardly think WS would have much of a reputation at all if their ratings were the equivalent of "best of Gallo", i.e., wineries big enough to have some motivation to advertise.

I'm not suggesting that they are pure and without influence ... the wine world is full of people who get pissed off at each other for one reason or another ... but I don't think it does any service to suggest that WS is prostituting itself for advertisers. There is plenty else wrong with their ratings without going there.
