Products Will Focus on Proprietary DHA-Omega-3 Oil
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- General Nutrition Companies, Inc. (GNC) (Nasdaq: GNCI) today announced that it will introduce a DHA-0mega-3 nutraceutical line of products through its retail outlet system as part of a nutraceutical alliance with Monsanto (NYSE: MTC). GNC will introduce Monsanto's ingredient SeaGold(TM), an oil rich in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) through its proprietary line of products in early 1998. SeaGold is Monsanto's patented and proprietary brand of natural DHA derived from golden marine microalgae and is a premium quality, plant-based alternative to fish oil sources of DHA. Under the terms of the alliance, which were not disclosed, GNC will provide the exclusive market introduction of the product as a dietary supplement.
As part of GNC's product development plans, GNC expects to introduce the first series of DHA products later this year. SeaGold is Monsanto's first entry into the functional food arena since reorganizing as a life sciences company in August 1997.
