Self-exam was one of those random variables that make the US and European sets non-comparable.

Aren't US and European women likely to be equally aware and capable of doing self-exams in your opinion? I don't see that as a variable that should vary much between the US and Europe.

I know. Again, the issue is how important it is to be exact about the benefits of mammograms for women in their 40's. For you, very, for me, not very.

I would not expect exact. I think ballpark is just fine for discussions like this. But being off by a factor of ten is out of the ballpark and into the next county.

You haven't verified that she was off by a factor of ten. That seems unreasonable given the importance of early detection. If you said by a factor of two or three, perhaps.

You said earlier mammograms in Europe would save lives (ie boost the survival rate) at "approximately the same rate in Europe". That is exactly what the writer you called dishonest and stupid assumed.

Good grief! Brumar, she didn't assume that at all.

I'm sorry but it sounds pretty close. I was surprised to see you say that earlier mammograms would save lives at "approximately the same rate in Europe" as here. But its clear you think the difference in survival rates is mostly due to things other than earlier average detection here. I don't know that. I rather think early detection is a primary reason for our higher survival rate. Perhaps its responsible for a majority of the difference - though you seem to think its a relatively minor cause. In your White Sox - Red Sox example, you compare early detection due to more early mammograms to one player on a baseball team. I think its more significant than that.
