In the US from the period of rougly 1880-1905 Companies formed monopolies called trusts that dictated prices and controlled markets. These same companies/trusts often had the state legislatures in their pockets. They proceeded to basically have their way in commerce by steam rolling any opposition to to their interests with showers of money.

As a result, the trusts were broken up by the Federal Government and this ushered in a new era of business regulation.

One need to always remember that is the job of Corporations to maximize profits for their shareholders. This is the reason for their existence. It is the government's job (in the USA) to regulate corporate activity so that the greater good is not sacrificed to maximum greed. This is always a balancing act that is forever needing adjustment and here it is being adjusted now as congress tries to figure out how much control to put on the US financial industry.
