The following excerpt is from the CDMA Development Group (CDG) web site at cdg.deltanet.com :

"Over The Air Service Provisioning (OTA) allows wireless carriers to activate and program their customers' phones quickly using the CDMA radio network. This capability enables separation of phone purchase from service purchase, allowing customers to use phones right out of the box, without waiting for dealer programming. OTA provides carriers opportunities to expand retail distribution channels and address the growing mass market for wireless services. The automated download
reduces phone programming errors and simplifies reprogramming of the phone. Moreover, OTA allows the Authentication Key (A-Key) to be downloaded in a very effective and secure way, simplifying the management of A-Keys and reducing wireless fraud. The CDG has defined specifications for both Dual Mode CDMA/analog (IS-95) and CDMA PCS (J-STD-008) air interfaces."

"The CDG has already developed CDMA circuit switched and packet switched data specifications and approaches for integration with Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) networks. The CDG has also begun work on further enhancements of CDMA to provide for high speed data services. Today, the CDMA network supports 9.6 kbps and 14.4 kbps transmission. The CDG vision is to develop data architecture and protocols to support applications that require 64 kbps to 500 kbps data speeds. This will open up many exciting applications, such as high speed mobile Internet access, for the users of the CDMA radio network and will bring the World Wide Web and high speed video into the mobile environment."
