Climategate is already giving clues. Over at Watts Up With That blog, Willis Eschenbach follows the answers that Dr. Phil Jones gives to Professor Wibjorn Karlen, who has reconstructed temperature numbers for Europe from base data, but doesn't get a hockey stick result, just late 20th century warming that isn't especially alarming. He tries to get some answers from Dr. Jones to explain the differing results, and gets a big runaround in response.
