The really good thing about pain is that it sometimes stops.

That is not so true of killing. If we simply stopped killing people it would certainly feel good to them to have it stop but, unlike pain, the survivors have lingering animosity which doesn't go away for a long time (until the survivor dies).

Morally though, it is never too late to stop killing and start treating the sick.
