There is some validity to that, Ted, but you pointed out the risk (no protection if they figure it out anyway). In my experience, the risk virtually always exceeds the reward of secrecy. What some companies I know have done is file a patent application and keep it "pending" for as long as possible, adding new claims whenever possible to stretch out the process. Then they have a chance of having it both ways -- first to file in case they need to go after a competitor, but no public disclosure while they use their first mover advantage to build the business.
