You're talking about Washington DC?

Depends upon where you live.. ;0)

And I can say that because I lived in the DC area for many years.. LOL!!

But the point is not much different. There are places in DC where you just don't dare go out at night and walk the neighborhood. And the majority of the violence is not black on white, but black on black..

Same thing in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as Somalia.

Again, I'm not democratic reform will work. But it MUST BE THE GOAL, and we have to re-think our expectations at some point in the future, then so be it and maybe we'll have to settle for an authoritarian regime that doesn't have overt militant religious overtones.

As Ed has correctly pointed out, in a half-hearted manner, religious militancy in the form of Islamic Jihad does resonate and it's a strong idea. And that's why it must be confronted, defeated, and refocused upon religious moderation and socio-economic progress.

And Afghanistan is only one front in this battle. Pakistan is the also a matter of grave concern, given it's nuclear state and divided political and ethnic tension.

And eventually, I fear, Somalia will be another front where we will need to fight.
