While you are correct that 90% of the people will not be able to store a year's worth in one year, this can be done over a period of a few years.
Humanity has worked very hard over several hundred years to make food NOT just in time.
Grains - wheat, rice are stored for months, sometimes years.
The larger farm animals (sheep, pigs, and cows) can be held off the market in response to market conditions, so they represent a large buffer.
Various types of processed food can last a long time.
The food will come from grain elevators, cattle herds and feedlots.
With slightly higher prices, additional crops will be planted, fields will be gleaned for missed grain, lower quality fruit will be harvested, etc. There is food thrown away at most stages of food production, except for animals.
In some places, like Florida and California, people have decorative fruit trees that are very lightly harvested.
In other parts of the world, food may be more just in time or even not in time. |
