Re: "a clarion trumpet call, a call to war,"

A 'call to war' for a war that is well into it's NINTH YEAR now?

(And has seriously been under-resourced for nigh-on to a decade now? Wonder what the hold-up was? :-)

Re: ...was deliver a whimpering surrender monologue"

A 'surrender monologue that will see allied forces reach their highest level of force commitment yet? Over a hundred thousand by summer? And the greatest amount of pressure on the enemy across the border in Pakistan ever? (Some 'surrender'....)

Re: "signalling to our allies everywhere and to the taliban and al quaida that we'll be leaving in 18 months"

Actually, no such signal has been sent. Even if we 'begin to start' a process of lowering troop levels (only if conditions on the ground are amenable to that at the time --- so said Sec. Def. Gates yesterday), that wouldn't necessarily mean anything like a full withdrawal. We could easily still be there in another decade, albeit hopefully with things much better in-hand by then and at much lower troop levels.

And, as Sec. Def. Gates also said yesterday: "If the Taliban wants to pull back on it's combat operations (hoping for us to leave) while we 1) TRAIN UP the new Afghan forces and 2) CONTINUE TO STRIKE their leadership in their cross-border hideouts... that would be GREAT WITH ME!!!!!!!!!!!"
