First off, personally I'm not so sure a Motorola spin-off would unlock much shareholder value. I still remember when AT&T did that with Lucent and Avaya and look what happened to both of them. Actually AT&T (at the time) and MOT have a lot in common; both were/are great companies with great products & technology that were very badly managed.

Apple ate Motorola's & Nokia's lunch because they innovated!
You have to be a leader, not a follower...

As for Carl Ichan; he lost his battle with MOT and to me personally is a dinosaur. He made a bad investment with MOT and should take his loss and move on.

Cell phones/smart phones whatever you want to call them will eventually end up - like all popular technolgy products - low margin, ubiquitous items similar to a pocket calculator.
