War is about territory Often, probably usually, but not always. Not being about territory doesn't imply "not a war", or "only metaphorically a war". For example if an organized armed force wants to wipe out another group, it can wage a war of extermination without territory being its motive. Also in the longest range vaguest terms, it could reasonably be said that our conflict with Al Qaeda is about territory. They want their ideology to control the world, or at least all the areas the Muslims have ever ruled, or failing that as much as they can get. A purely conventional war might be strategically, operationally and tactically about territory. An insurgency, might only be strategically about territory. A war against Al Qaeda would be vaguely about territory in the most long range (and IMO unrealistic on their part) grand strategy terms.
