To give an idea of what a unique and irreplaceable substance conventional oil is its illuminating to look at how difficult it is to produce liquid transport fuel (such as diesel) from something else, such as natural gas. The oil company Shell is in the process of constructing the largest gas-to-liquids (GTL) plant in the world in Qatar in the Persian Gulf. When completed the GTL Plant will produce 140,000 barrels of transport fuel and 120,000 barrels of other products per day. While this GTL Plant is a fantastic industrial achievement, it shows the severe limitations of alternative methods of producing transport fuels from anything but conventional oil. Like I said, conventional oil is one of a kind.

Shell has a website for the GTL Plant at shell.com
