I wonder what Ted's reason for remaining unemployed. Perhaps this is the all encompassing one for him:

Don't have the necessary resources to succeed

The reason is simple. Why work when you can have a few years of taking it easy on unemployment? Lather on some Los Angeles-induced PTSD, and you may just have a pretty good living.
