And the Soviet Union had an adjacent border - train logistics as opposed to air logistics. The supplies were much, much cheaper for them to replenish than for us. I just don't understand the mindset that allowed the US military planners to want to pick up demonstrated failures by other countries, vis as vis, Vietnam after the French, and Afghanistan after the Russians.
