I don't think that's actually true. And if it is its rather bizarre. Saudi Arabia is a political construct that has no special connection to Mecca other than the fact that Mecca is within its borders. In the past Mecca had been controlled by other political units with little or no connection with modern Saudi Arabia. Spots in the dessert a thousand km away are no more Mecca than Fargo ND, is Dallas, TX.
